OPT-IN End Users
Privacy is one of the most important considerations a developer must take into account when designing an LBS application or service. Integral to respecting an end user’s privacy is the notion of obtaining end user OPT-IN before location information can be obtained for their phone. Not only do LBS best practices require OPT-IN, but they also require that OPT-IN be received via text message from the handset that is to be located. The text message requirement is a further safeguard that references end-user permission to a particular handset, thereby reducing fraud and user error.
OPT-IN end users
Locaid provides a short code that can be used to receive OPT-IN text messages from end users. Depending upon the carrier requirements, the opt-in may need to be confirmed by the end-user via a two-step exchange of SMS (i.e., double opt-in).
Single opt-in merely requires a potential user to send MO-SMS to the short code indicating they want to receive service.
For double opt-in the initial opt-in will be challenged, to which the end-user must confirm to complete the process.
Any user who fails to complete the required steps of the opt-in process will not be locatable.
